On a Road in Africa
On a Road in Africa.
Berkeley, CA: Tricycle Press, 2008. $15.95,
Note: Mama O is on the road, gathering food for orphaned animals in Africa.
Written and illustrated by Kim Doner, this picture book profiles the sights, smells, and sounds of Mama O's journey to the Nairobi Animal Orphanage. As Mama O drives along the road purchasing items for the animals, we see people from all walks of life, vehicles, and a variety of animals, some domestic and some wild. In the Afterword by Chryssee Perry Martin, we learn that Martin is the real Mama O, who for thirty years has cared for animals at the Nairobi orphanage. The illustrations are lively, the text bouncy and there are Swahili words on the inside front and back covers. The title, however, mislead. It should be country-specific i.e. "On a Road in Kenya" instead of the generic "Africa." Also Doner does not provide even a glimpse of the city of Nairobi. Including city scenes would have helped to dispel the animal kingdom stereotype of Kenya. Copyright 2009 Africa Access
