Review

This picture book covers the salient facts of Wangari Maathai's life, including the beatings and imprisonment that Maathai had to endure to address ecological imbalances in Kenya. Author/illustrator Jeanett Winter's simple narrative makes Maathai's story accessible even to preschoolers. However, her illustrations are not as detailed or as authentic as those of Clair Nivola's in Planting the Trees of Kenya: The Story of Wangari Maathai . Also Winter's depiction of Kenyan women makes them appear more like beasts of burden than environmental activists. Additionally, she downplays the country of Kenya with her subtitle, A True Story from Africa. Recommended, especially if coupled with Nivola's book. Copyright 2009 Africa Access
